To the editor:
Facts indicate Independence’s population is stagnant, even somewhat declining (The Examiner, July 15). So what is the need for more police officers and more taxes?
The current tax rate is higher than most communities in Jackson County now and even higher in the I-70/M-291 shopping area. Some states with sales taxes this high have eliminated the state income tax altogether. Independence citizens have generously supported needed improvement in the streets and parks in recent years by approving tax increases, but we already have a modern, effective Police Department. Now is the time to say “NO” to more taxes. Vote “No” on Aug. 4.
