  • As David Simoes laced up his skates before a Wednesday afternoon practice session at the Independence Events Center, one could sense his excitement.
“I can’t wait to get back out on the ice,” said Simoes, who has been on the injured reserve list with an upper body injury. “I’m making the trip to Rapid City this weekend and hope to play – and help the team get four points.”
Simoes, who won the CHL’s Toughest Player Award the past two seasons, was activated from the injured reserve list Thursday. He missed the last six games and hasn’t played since Dec. 28 in Wichita.
“We’re thrilled to have Simmers back on the ice,” Mavericks coach Scott Hillman said of the veteran defender. “We’re a better team with him in the lineup. It may take a game or two to shake the rust off, but we wouldn’t have activated him if we didn’t think he could help.”
The Mavericks also announced that goaltender Mathieu Corbeil has been reassigned to the Mavericks by the team’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Chicago Wolves.
Corbeil, who did not get into a game in his brief stint with Chicago, has appeared in nine games with the Mavericks and has a 3-6 mark with a 2.79 goals-against average and .908 save percentage. He will join the team in Rapid City.
“(Mike) Clemente has been outstanding for the team,” Hillman said, referring to the rookie goaltender who has started the last 18 games while Corbeil recovered from an upper body injury,” but he’s going to need a break at some point of the season.
“Right now, we just have the weekend games in January, but we have a lot of games on the schedule in February and we will work Corbeil back into the lineup.”
