  • Denise Craig, physical education teacher at Truman High School, was named Teacher of the Year for the Independence School District. She previously won Teacher of the Year at Truman and her name was placed in a pool with other teachers of the year at schools districtwide. District officials made the announcement Thursday morning.
Craig has been physical education teacher at Truman for 11 years.
She received her bachelor’s degree at the University of Central Missouri and her master’s degree from Lesley College in Boston. She’s taken courses in nutrition at the University of Kansas. Craig taught elementary physical education at Fort Osage School District before coming to Truman. She’s also the varsity girls volleyball coach at Truman.
1 Were you surprised by being announced Teacher of the Year?
I was surprised by being nominated Teacher of the Year at Truman. And then I was really surprised by the second one (district Teacher of the Year). It’s such an honor when you see your name on the list with teachers being nominated. I never dreamed it and definitely never expected it.
2 Why do you think you received this award?
First of all, if I had a kid I would want them in my class. Doing the little things pays off. I can tell you that all teachers here work really hard and do a lot of little extra things.
3 Did you receive award money?
I received about $400 from Richard’s United Super and the Rotary Club. I turned the money over to my principal because I want to use the money to have lunch for all the teachers next week. We all deserve it.
4 What qualities does it take to be a good gym teacher?
I think you have to be highly motivated in education. I’m tireless. I just keep going. I don’t think I do anything better than anyone else. I just think I enjoy my job. I enjoy coming to Truman.
5 Give us an example of a physical education class you teach.
We adopted a new class. It’s called lifetime fitness. It’s mainly girls. They work out hard. It’s one of my favorite classes. We make it fun. I hope we make it fun. I think the kids would tell you that ‘Craig’s a positive person.’ Maybe that’s what it’s all about.
