In The Groves’ first year of entering the Ms. Missouri Nursing Home Pageant competition, the Independence retirement community found a winner in Connie Rastberger.

On Wednesday, Rastberger, 78, took home the state title of Ms. Missouri Nursing Home at the statewide competition in Branson, Mo. The Missouri Health Care Association sponsors the annual competition, and each association district hosts a preliminary competition for its area.

Rastberger won the District 1 queen title on June 30. Contestants are judged on criteria like personality, spryness and life activities prior to and while now living in a care center.

She has lived at The Groves for about four years, and Rastberger’s story is one of rags-to-riches, as she was raised in a Texas orphanage, was a wife and mother by age 16 and later became a successful cosmetics saleswoman in department stores.

In early July, Rastberger was profiled in The Examiner, saying she lives her life by this motto: “No rocker for me.”

“Just live, you know. Just live, and make the best of it,” Rastberger said in early July. “You’re never too old. What is there to be afraid of? Our Lord loves us.”
