The next round of Freedom from Smoking courses offered by the Independence Health Department is starting in a couple of weeks.


The weekly smoking cessation classes are available for the public starting Sept. 13 and ending Oct. 18. Freedom from Smoking focuses on triggers, strategies to change behavior and how to manage stress related to quitting tobacco.


Each session starts at 5:30 p.m., lasts about one hour and takes place at the Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple Ave. The cost is $50, and pre-registration is required.


Class participation numbers are unlimited, but a minimum of 10 people must enroll for the class to take place. Visit www.independencemo.org/health or visit the Health Department (515 S. Liberty St.) to register. Call 816-325-7185 for more information.


Class topics will include the following: reasons for quitting and removing roadblocks; preparing to quit and setting a quit date; quitting: rewards and avoiding pitfalls; staying off cigarettes and dealing with tough times; avoiding weight gain and the positive power of exercise; and becoming a non-smoker and what to do if you slip.
