  • Students at Grain Valley High School need to be prepared for some upcoming traffic changes as a result of construction beginning next week.
The traffic plan begins Tuesday and will affect student drivers, bus riders and parent drop-off and pickup through the end of the school year. Construction on the new classroom addition starts Tuesday and is expected to be completed Aug. 1.
“The construction project will temporarily remove the back road loop near the baseball fields,” said Marc Snow, assistant superintendent of finance and support services. “It will be adjusted and replaced as part of the project.”
For bus riders, the school buses will enter the northwest entrance of the high school in the mornings and drop off at the north doors of the high school. At the end of the school day, buses will be parked two wide on the north and northeast sides of the building. Students should exit through the doors on the north side, outside of rooms 213, 406 or 411.
Parents will continue to drop off at the two north entrance doors. However, the school buses will also be using these lanes to drop off. Cars are being asked to yield to buses in all situations. In the afternoon, parents will line up in front of Sni-A-Bar Elementary and will wait there until the buses have left the parking lot. They can then pull up in front of the high school to pick up their children.
For student drivers, there will be no change to the morning entrance pattern. However, they should be aware that parents and school buses will also be using the same entrance. They are being asked to yield to the buses in all situations and drive slow. In the afternoon, they will only be able to use the northwest exit near Sni-A-Bar Elementary. Driving around by the tennis courts will no longer be an option.
“Parents and students can help the most by being patient with this process and progress. Parents and buses will now pick up and drop off at the front of the building.” Snow said. “In the morning, they will do that simultaneously. In the afternoon, buses will pick up first, then parents will be able to pick up their students. No car riders will be dismissed to parents until all buses have left.”
