To the editor:
I am happy to see the city is finding a solution to recycling electronics locally. A few years ago we drove to the warehouse in Kansas City and paid $35 to recycle a TV because it was the right thing to do.
After reading The Examiner’s article – “Permanent Solution: Ongoing electronics recycling to take place at two facilities,” March 7 – and the comments made by Council Member Curt Dougherty, I am perplexed. He asks what it would cost to “pick them up off the side of the road?” It would cost our tax dollars and cause unsightly roadways, Mr. Dougherty. Suggesting “some other way to get rid of it, even if it was just smashing it up in pieces and putting it out in the trash” is condoning his constituents to do the same. I find it hard to believe he would want the multitude of toxic materials from unwanted electronic products in his backyard as it will be for future generations.
Let me suggest that if you can’t pay to have your old electronics disposed of properly, let it sit in your garage or basement until you can. And in answer to Councilman Dougherty’s poor example, questions and comments: It’s because it’s the right thing to do!
