  • To the editor:
The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) has taken the word “Christian” out of the platform. The organization is now know as the “Y.” The founding purposes of the organization were to promote evangelical religion, to cultivate Christian sympathy and to improve the spiritual, intellectual and social conditions of young men. Today that is no longer the mission. It is more of a commercial business competing with other area health clubs.
I used to be a member of the Independence branch. I thought it served the community well and was always busy. That will no longer be the case. Sadly, closing three area Y’s and building a new facility in downtown Kansas City will no longer serve Independence, Raytown or Kansas City, Kan.
