John Robert Calhoun, 55, died Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Mo.


John was born December 23, 1957, in Canton, Ohio, to Blaine L. Calhoun Sr. and Leila M. (Edgell) Calhoun/Long. John was a retired veteran of the United States Army, where he served as a Military Police Officer and was involved with Cartography Design. In the past 5 years, John served as an Engineer Technician with Garmin Navigations. John was a simple man who could accomplish anything he set his mind to. He loved spending time with family and always put everyone else before himself. He was a very knowledgeable and caring man who never missed an opportunity to share what he knew with those in need.


He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Kim; daughter, Sarah and son-in-law, Chris; daughter, Melissa; grandchildren, Deacon and Gabrielle; mother, Leila; brothers, Wendell, Darwin and Blaine; sisters, Edith, Reta and Deloris; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Blaine, stepfather, Harold, and brother-in-law, Randy.


Visitation and service will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, March 28, at New Salem Funeral Home, 1823 N. Blue Mills Road, Independence.
