Two people died Friday in separate vehicle crashes locally.
An Oak Grove High School junior died Friday afternoon in a head-on collision on Mecklin School Road not far from his home.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said the teenager, Joseph Charles Scott, 17, responded at 3:45 p.m. Friday to a call of a crash north of Oak Grove in unincorporated Jackson County.
Officers responded to Mecklin School Road north of Truman Road and found two vehicles that had collided. The driver of one car, a 46-year-old Buckner man, said he began to crest a hill on northbound Mecklin and saw a red Pontiac Grand Am coming toward him in his lane. He told deputies he tried to avoid the crash, but couldn’t.
Scott died at the scene, according to Sni Valley Fire and EMS personnel. He was a member of the Oak Grove High School track and field team.
The Buckner driver was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Both drivers were believed to be wearing their seat belts.
Independence Police Department accident reconstructionists were called in to help with the investigation to determine the exact cause.
Also on Friday, Independence police investigated a fatal two-car accident on U.S. 24 near the Missouri 291 frontage road.
Reanna White, 22, of Independence, was driving a car south when she was struck and killed by a westbound driver, Independence police said.
