  • After Blue Springs Board of Education members saw a preliminary draft of the 2013-14 calendar earlier in December, there was discussion on the benefits of another professional development day for staff.
That request caused the Calendar Committee to meet in an emergency session and find a spot for the additional day, which was met with a positive response from teachers and staff throughout the district.
“With common core and MSIP 5 (the statewide school accountability review)  upcoming, there was a need for additional professional development days,” said Superintendent Paul Kinder at the Blue Springs Board of Education meeting Monday. “We had staff meetings and either had good feedback or no feedback. No feedback usually is a positive sign.”
The board approved the calendar, which sets the first day of school at Aug. 15, and the last day at May 22, 2014. Thanksgiving break is Nov. 27 to 29, and winter break is Dec. 23 to Jan. 3. Spring break is March 17 to 21, 2014, and April 18 will be given as Easter Break. There are five professional development days, including the new one on Nov. 22.
Any missed days due to inclement weather will be made up at the end of the school year.
In addition, the board approved the retirement of Dave Elton, director of technology for the school district. Elton has been with the district for 16 years.
“This is the time of year when people start talking about retirement,” Kinder said. “It is always bittersweet. We wish Dave the best. He has done a great job for us, and he will be missed.”
