As one school calendar in Oak Grove is amended, thoughts are already turning to next year and when students will return to classes in August.

The Oak Grove Board of Education approved an amended 2009-10 school calendar Monday as well as the 2010-11 school calendar.

This year’s amended calendar converts a professional development day, March 19, to a make-up snow day. Currently, Oak Grove students have missed eight days because of inclement weather, including the most recent on Monday.

With the built-in snow days May 7 and 14, Oak Grove is scheduled to end the school year May 28.

“It simply changes that day to a regular school day,” said Superintendent Freddie Doherty. “Let’s hope we don’t have any more missed days.”

The 2010-11 school calendar is scheduled to begin with the first day of school Aug. 19. Thanksgiving break is Nov. 24 to 26 and winter break is Dec. 20 to 31. The last day of school is May 20, 2011.

Doherty said the calendar option presented to the board was overwhelmingly the favorite among staff members in large part, because of the longer winter break.

In addition, inclement weather days are built into the calendar, including May 23 to 26. Doherty said, however, he hopes those days will not have to be used.

“Hopefully, next year will not be the same,” he said with a smile. “We really hope it is not the same.”
