Former area gymnast Sarah Shire has tied a Big 12 record.

The University of Missouri senior, who used to train at Great American Gymnastic Express (GAGE) in Blue Springs, was named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week for the fourth time this season on Tuesday.

It marks the 11th time she has won the weekly award, tying her with Nebraska’s Emily Parsons for the most honors in conference history.

Shire was honored for registering a new career-high score of 39.625 against Oklahoma last weekend to win her fifth all-around title this season. The senior, who is ranked ninth in the nation in the all-around and sixth on beam, won the vault with a season-high score of 9.925 and tied for the uneven bars win with another 9.925. She tallied a 9.900 on the balance beam and a 9.875 in the floor exercise for the 19th-ranked Tigers.

Shire earned All-America first team honors in the vault last season with an 11th-place finish with a 9.900 during the all-around competition. She was NCAA South Central Region Gymnast of the Year and co-Big 12 Gymnast of the Year last season as the Big 12 all-around, vault and beam champion.
