Blue Springs Post 499/Fike and Independence Post 21 opened the season with impressive victories.


Sam Morman doubled and hit a three-run homer with six RBIs and Jared Ginter doubled twice and singled with three RBIs as Fike defeated Oak Grove Post 379 12-2 in a first-round game in the Memorial Day American Legion  Tournament at the Independence Athletic Complex Friday night.


On the adjoining field, Post 21 rolled past the Independence VFW Post 1000 Jerry's Sports Bears 15-1.


Fike winner Cody Cloughley and Jordan Oddo combined for a five-inning three-hitter. Cloughley also doubled with one RBI and Anthony Dutcher singled and doubled.


“We have a lot of kids who have to learn to play together, but we had solid defense and hit the ball in key situations,” Fike manager Jim Moran said.


Post 21 scored seven runs in the third inning and eight more in the fourth in topping the Bears. Donnie Hayes posted the win and Omar Herrera took the loss.


Josh Felz singled, doubled and tripled, James O’Dell singled and homered, Jake Wingo and Connor Polocek each singled twice and Jamie Hayes doubled to power Post 21’s 11-hit attack.


ST. JOSEPH POST 11 17-8, INDEPENDENCE VFW POST 1000 JERRY'S SPORTS BEARS 3-2:  The Bears opened the season and Zone 2 West play by falling twice at St. Joseph Post 11 Thursday night.


Houston Richards suffered the loss. Jake Douthat singled and doubled and Luke Powers hit a three-run homer.


Dakota Knight was the losing pitcher in the second game. Andy Anderson powered the Bears attack with two singles and a double and three RBIs.


“They improved in the second game,” Bears manager Ron Phillips said.
