Donald R. Coleman Sr., 79, of Independence, Mo., passed away November 17, 2009, at Kansas City Hospice House.

Donald R. Coleman Sr., 79, of Independence, Mo., passed away November 17, 2009, at Kansas City Hospice House.

Memorial services will be at 12 p.m. on Sunday, November 29, at SGI USA, 1804 Broadway, Kansas City, Mo. Military graveside services were held with the immediate family at an earlier date.

Don was born May 21, 1930, in Oak Park, Illinois, to Andrew A. and Flossie K. (Curtright) Coleman. Don joined the Army in 1947. While stationed in Japan he met and married Miyoko Ara. He served in the US Army for 20 years and retired in 1971. After his retirement from the service he worked at the Environmental Protection Agency as a lab technition for 20 years and retired from there. He was a member of SGI for 28 years. He enjoyed woodworking and taking care of his family.  Spending time with his grandchildren gave him the greatest pleasure.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Rhonda D. Queener. He will be fondly remembered by his friends and family: his wife of 54 years, Miyoko A. Coleman of the home, a daughter Donna Dunning and husband Don of Independence, daughter Andrea Cappuzzo of Independence, son Don Coleman, Jr. of Blue Springs, son-in-law Emmett Queener of Columbia, Mo, his beloved grandchildren, Amanda, Kyle, Serena, Tasha, Amber and Jeremy, and two great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care for all their help, support and compassion. The family also suggests memorial contributions to cancer research.  Arrangements by Marts Memorial Services.
