  • The third-place trophy in the Clinton Tournament barely eluded the Van Horn boys basketball team.
The Falcons suffered a tough 55-53 loss to Crossroads Conference rival Sherwood Friday night.
“We were terrible defensively in the first half,” Van Horn coach Daniel Bieser said. “We had a chance to tie it at the end but couldn’t hit the shot. For the most part the players played hard.”
Robert Bluett totaled 13 points, Anthony Winningham posted 12 and Michael Payne added nine for the Falcons (6-11), who trailed 39-33 at halftime.
SUMMIT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 71, ST. MARY’S 69: The Trojans suffered their toughest boys basketball loss of the season as Taurin Hawkins hit a shot at the buzzer, giving host SCA the Crossroads Conference victory Friday night.
“It was a tough shot,” St. Mary’s coach Carlos Paige said. “We had a hand in his face.”
The teams were tied 43-43 at halftime.
“It was a heck of a game,” Paige said. “We tied it on a free throw and then they hit the winning shot."
Wade Johnson poured in 24 points to lead St. Mary’s (6-10, 0-3). Antonio Johnson and Easton Aspegren each added 10 and Sam Kenney eight.
“I was real proud of the effort by the guys,” Paige said.
SCA activities director Jake Kates presented St. Mary’s teacher Glenn Young and teacher/coach/administrator Sara Kenney with a plaque for their many years of service to the school.
