  • A Kansas City man who Independence police helped catch is going to federal prison on a child pornography conviction.
Russell S. Nicholson, 36, on Thursday was sentenced to 10 years in prison without parole. He pleaded guilty last August to a charge of attempting to receive child pornography over the Internet. He was sentenced by U.S. Chief District Judge Fernando J. Gaitan.
The office of the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Missouri says Nicholson was arrested when an Independence officer, working undercover with an officer from Salem, Ore., identified Nicholson’s computer as sharing files with child pornography. Those included nine videos of minors having sex with other minors or adults. Some of the victims in the videos were as young as 3. Some of the men in the videos commit sadistic or other violent sexual activity.
Nicholson admitted he had downloaded child pornography for about 10 years. Police seized three computers at his apartment, and those contained evidence of child pornography. Nicholson admitted that when he heard about the police having a warrant to search his apartment, he threw a laptop into a Dumpster because he knew it had child pornography on it.
