  • The Independence Police Department has issued a public safety advisory because of the impending winter weather. The area is under a winter storm warning and the National Weather Service is forecasting 6-12 inches of snow, sleet and ice for the area.
    The advisory reads:
“With the impending winter storm calling for high accumulations of snow and sleet, Independence Police are advising all citizens of Independence to limit as much road travel as possible. With the large amount of snow and sleet expected in such a short period of time, road crews will be challenged to keep streets plowed for safe travel.
“It is important for all motorists to not park any vehicles along streets during this time. Snow plows will be working steadily to keep the streets clear for emergency vehicles such as fire, police and ambulance, as well as utility vehicles transporting crews to restore services should they be lost.
“If a vehicle is left parked on the street, not only will it impede emergency vehicle traffic, it will more than likely be stuck behind a large pile of ice and snow from the snowplows keeping the streets cleared.
“If possible, please try to park off of the streets for everyone's safety. We anticipate more than the usual number of motor vehicle accidents during this time and any vehicles parked along the streets will be at an increased risk of causing and accident, and possibly being involved in the accident.
“Please stay safe, and thank you for your efforts toward making this a safer community.”
