By Thursday morning, at least 6 inches of snow had fallen in Blue Springs and Independence, with more to come. Visibility has been a major issue all morning and road conditions continue to worsen. The Independence Police Department has shut down Missouri 291 from 32nd Street to Interstate 70 because of the road conditions. Interstate 70 in both directions from Salina, Kan. to Hays, Kan. has been closed as well as portions on Interstate 35 and Interstate 435 in the Kansas City area. KCI has also been closed indefinitely as crews work to clear runways. The area continues to be under a Winter Storm Warning until midnight.
Although the snow is expected to slow down, it will continue throughout the rest of Thursday. Up to 12 inches is expected in some areas by the time the storm system moves out of the area. A State of Emergency has also been declared for the city of Independence. Motorists should not park vehicles long the streets as snow plows are continuing to work to keep streets clear for emergency vehicles. The IndeBus Service and the Kansas City bus system has also suspended all of its routes for the remainder of the day.
Although all schools in the metropolitan area canceled school for today, many area businesses opted to follow suit by closing Thursday. These include Jackson County offices, Mid-Continent Libraries, all Kansas City YMCA locations, Adams Dairy Landing, Centerpoint Community Ice Rink and Cargo Largo. The Kansas City Zoo also closed for the day as well as AMC Theaters, the Legends Shopping Outlets in Kansas City, Kan. and Oak Park Mall in Johnson County.
St. John LaLande Catholic Church in Blue Springs has canceled all evening activities. There is no word yet on any school cancellations for Friday, but stay tuned to The Examiner’s website as information becomes available.
