  • Dental Arts in Independence recently participated in the Give Kids a Smile program, a national event where dentists provide dental services to children in need within their community.
All of these services are provided for free, even if the child has insurance. During the one-day event, 18 children were seen and the three dentists in the practice performed 112 procedures. After their visit to the dentist, each one left with a new tooth brush, toothpaste and dental floss to continue caring for their teeth.
Kathy Summers, a front office staff member at Dental Arts, spoke about why the program is so important in the community.
    1. What was the Give Kids a Smile program like for your office?
“We partnered with a local elementary school, William Southern, as well as families we knew that were in need. We offered to see their children and tried to take care of as many issues as we could during that one day event.”
    2. What types of procedures did you perform?
“We did cleanings, exams, sealants, fillings, root canals and extracted wisdom teeth. We were pretty busy.”
    3. Why is important for Dental Arts to participate in this event?
“We have had such great success in our own office that we believe in giving back to the community. This is one event that we participate in year after year.”
    4. Why is it important to take care of teeth, even at a young age?
“What a lot of people don’t know is that decay in baby teeth, if it is severe enough, can affect the permanent teeth down below. It can also be uncomfortable for the kids, causing them not to eat properly, and children tend to be sick more often because of the bacteria in their mouth. We want to educate the kids on healthy habits, including keeping their teeth clean.”
