  • A federal judge sentenced a Blue Springs man to life in prison Tuesday for producing child pornography.
William G. Weiss, 40, of Blue Springs, who was a registered sex offender, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for creating videos of his sexual assault of a child.
U.S. District Court Judge Greg Kays gave Weiss a life sentence because Weiss was a registered sex offender because of two prior convictions for attempted statutory sodomy of two other children.
It was the first case prosecuted in the Western District of Missouri under the Project Safe Childhood federal statute that mandates a life sentence if a defendant with a prior child sex conviction is convicted of another federal sex offense in which there is a child victim.
Weiss pleaded guilty on Nov. 21, 2012 to producing child porn. He admitted he used an 8- or 9-year-old girl to make a video. He admitted to sexually assaulting the girl eight to 10 times.
Police found a video of child pornography on Weiss’ cell phone during an investigation into the sexual assault of another minor, a case in which Weiss has been charged with statutory sodomy and attempted statutory rape in Jackson County Circuit Court. The video depicted Weiss having sex with a girl, whom Weiss said was the daughter of a friend. Police also found two more videos with the same victim.
