  • An Independence man was charged Tuesday in the rape of a 15-year-old girl.
Michael J. Coyle, 20, who lives in the 1300 block of Baker Drive in Independence, was charged in Jackson County Court with one count of forcible rape.
According to court documents, the girl told a school counselor that she had been raped on May 12 and had been molested by Coyle several times in the past.
Coyle allegedly raped the girl during a Mother’s Day visit to his mother’s house in Lee’s Summit. Coyle allegedly told police when his mother and stepfather left the house because his brother had been in an automobile accident, he enticed the victim downstairs and raped her.
The victim told police she had told her mother that she had been molested by Coyle several times in the past, but that the mother did not believe her story.
After the victim talked to police at school and was taken to a hospital for a rape exam, Coyle was arrested and taken to the Lee’s Summit Police Department, where he was questioned.
Prosecutors have requested a cash bond of $100,000.
