  • An Independence man was charged Tuesday with multiple felony counts after allegedly confining his girlfriend and assaulting her.
Cornelius Coleman, 32, is charged with one count of kidnapping, two counts of first-degree domestic assault, two counts of second-degree domestic assault, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon and three counts of armed criminal action.
Coleman allegedly restrained his girlfriend in handcuffs at his home in the 8800 block of East Smart Avenue in northwestern Independence, according to court documents. Court records also say he also assaulted her by striking her repeatedly and choking her with a belt, burning her with a pipe used to smoke methamphetamine and placing a gun in her mouth.
According to a police spokesperson, bond was set at $500,000 with 10 percent secured after Jackson County prosecutors said they requested a $250,000 cash bond.
Coleman had been on parole and was a registered sex offender. He was convicted of first-degree statutory rape when he was 18 in 1999 for having sex with a 12-year-old girl.
