  • An Independence man has pleaded not guilty in Lafayette County Court to a charge of killing his 10-week-old daughter.
Alex A. Gilbert, 24, of Independence, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of his daughter.
Gilbert, after being arrested, made his first court appearance in Lexington Thursday morning and entered a not guilty plea. He is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond.
The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office said the baby died on Monday and that an autopsy showed a skull fracture, brain damage and numerous broken bones.
Police were called to a home in the southwestern part of Lafayette County last Friday and found the baby unresponsive. The girl was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Blue Springs before being transferred to Children’s Mercy in Kansas City, where she died.
The Jackson County medical examiner performed the autopsy and ruled the death a homicide.
Gilbert’s next scheduled court appearance is set for 9 a.m. May 29 in the Lafayette County Court in Lexington. If convicted, Gilbert could face life in prison.
