  • Independence businesses plan to honor local first responders at a first-of-its-kind celebration next month.
The Independence Chamber of Commerce is having the First Responders Recognition and Awards Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. June 14 at the Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple Ave. The Examiner is sponsoring the event.
The chamber is looking for nominations of firefighters, police officers, EMTs and other first responders in Independence. There are four award categories:
    • Heroism, which the chamber says is about “evidencing a quality and/or attribute of unselfish courage as shown by a specific noble act.”
    • Community Service – “being involved in activities and organizations on his/her own time that benefit the common good within the community in which he/she lives.”
    • Bravery – “displaying unusual courage and valor through multiple specific instances.”
    • Dedication – “commitment to the persons assisted by the first responder after the event that brought them together.”
Nominations are due to the chamber by 3 p.m. June 3. Call the chamber at 816-252-4745, or go to http://ichamber.biz/ to download a nomination form. Those with local businesses or non-profits who have first-hand knowledge of exemplary acts, or exemplary work overall, are asked to submit nominations.
“There are other chambers and business associations around the country that do this. There was some interest on our board,” said chamber President and CEO Franklin “Kim” Kimbrough.
In Independence in particular, he said, business leaders and others have a great deal of respect for those who work in public safety. The idea to do something to express that gratitude came up last fall when Kimbrough came on board and the chamber was drawing up some long-term plans.
“They hold them in high regard, so that was a natural,” he said.
Businesses also can support the event by attending. The cost is $160 per table.
