  • ABF: Now's a good time to adopt

  • If you are thinking about getting a new pet this is a good time of year to do it.

Trips to go outside aren’t as painful as they are in the winter, and the good weather gives one more chances to go outside and play with one’s new four-legged companion. Play is important; it is bonding time with your pet.

No matter who you adopt a pet from, remember that this is a lifelong choice. Pets should be part of the family and be allowed to stay where the family does. People who adopt animals just to leave them out in the yard on a chain or in a kennel all the time have no real good reason to own an animal. If one isn’t going to bond and interact with the animal, they don’t need it.
Pets are expensive and the more one has the more expense it is. Cats and dogs need to go to the veterinarian at least once a year for a checkup, much like we do. Vaccinations are necessary to keep an animal healthy, although there is debate regarding the rabies vaccines. Pets should be kept on heart worm preventative year round to save them from a terrible condition and possible painful death. It only takes one mosquito bite to infect an animal with heartworm larvae.
After bringing a new pet home one should give a pet their own space. A bed in a kennel or a bed in the corner of a bedroom works well. Animals are funny about spaces. I’ve watched our four girls wrangle for a spot next to Mom near her living room chair or on her bed. Although many pets sleep with their owners, it is always good to be sure they do have their own bed and space.
If one has a pet and wants to bring another one home it is best to have the current pet meet the possible new pet on neutral ground. This can be a good indication of whether they will get along or not. Some experts say it is best to have a mixture of males and females (altered of course) to prevent fights. I can vouch for that! We have four females and we have had some very serious fights.
This is one advantage of adopting from Animals Best Friends. They do home visits and two week trials to be sure the pet is a good fit. If the situation doesn’t work out, ABF takes the animal back.
One way of being sure that an animal fits into one’s family and lifestyle is to foster an animal. Animals Best Friends is always looking for good foster homes. Fostering is a very rewarding experience whether one sees the foster pet get a fabulous forever home or the foster parent chooses to keep the pet as their own.
Page 2 of 2 - If you decide that you really want an animal please do some research on breeds and behavior to be sure the pet you choose will be a good fit. Mixed breeds are wonderful and usually healthier than purebreds. Please remember that a pet is a family member and should be treated with respect.
