On May 11, the IBEX Climbing Gym in Blue Springs hosted the Regional Climbing Finals. This event brought 133 climbers and their families from nine states into our community. The event started at 7 a.m. ran until almost 9 p.m., meaning that most of these people spent two nights in local motels and had meals all across Blue springs.
Sadly, this event aroused little interest in our community, other than finding that seating in our local restaurants Saturday evening was less available than usual.
The team from Grimes, Iowa, brought down 23 climbers and most of their families. So when you look at nine states with multiple teams and family members coming into Blue Springs, this amounted to a financial boost to the economy of our community.
Consider that the IBEX employs only one full-time employee, and six to eight part-time, mostly high school students. You can see the effect that “small businesses” have on our community, as well as our nation’s economy. Small business truly is how to fix a lot of the nation’s employment problems.
