1 What is the current state of  Independence theatre?
I think that the state of theatre in Independence is good and bad. It is good in the fact that we do draw a very nice audience and many have come to more than one show, as our 150 season ticket holders prove.  However; on the professional scene, I feel that all of Eastern Jackson County is neglected.

2 How important are the arts?
I believe that the arts are extremely important to this country, as an educational tool as well as for entertainment. I believe that in my 40-plus years of theater, I have learned more, history, science, geography than I did in any classroom. It also helps entertainment-wise, it allows a healthy escape from the worries of the day.

3 What’s the best thing about Independence theater?
The people. Community Theatre is the best way to make friends, anyone can be a part of it. It’s not all about acting. There is costuming, props, set construction, painting, lighting, sound and the list goes on. All that one needs to do is show up.

4 How can it improve?
Right now, we are having storage issues. We rent three storage units for all of our set pieces but, financially we can’t realistically do that any more so, we will have to get rid of a lot of nice furniture, costumes and other set related décor. We just can’t afford it and when this all goes then the quality look of our shows may suffer. A solution to our storage woes would go a long ways in improving the quality.

5 How can you make Independence theater more relevant and popular?
I think getting more of the “community” involved with community theater would help. We need new people and new ideas. I think as far as relevancy we need more of a variety in our shows, if we are going to be a “community” theater then we need to do a variety of shows that appeal to all of the different people in the community, not just the cute little comedies.
