    The award is given to a city employee, elected official or volunteer who has led well while serving or demonstrating valor.
    Block was on the Indepenence City Council from 1992 to 1996, and she was a member and at one time the president of the Junior Service League.
    The winner is selected by a committee of local service club presidents. The award is $1,000, a silver sterling medallion and a sterling silver lapel pin, all paid by the memorial fund established by Block’s father after her death in 1996.
    Nominations are due by Aug. 16 to the Junior Service League, 3122 S. Crysler Ave., Independence, Mo. 64052. Nomination forms are available from Johnna Bodenstab of theJunior Service League, city department heads and the Independence Chamber of Commerce, 210 W. Truman Road. Forms can be printed from the Susan Paxton Block Public Service story on the city’s website at www.independencemo.org.
