A conversation between fans about Blue Springs South quarterback Calvin Jacobson midway through the third quarter of the Jaguars’ game against Park Hill south wasn’t anything earth shattering.
Members of the Park Hill South contingent sitting in the stands of Preston Field at Park Hill High School offered an honest assessment of Jacobson, a senior now in his second year as the Jaguars’ starting signal-caller.
“(Jacobson) has been on the money all night,” one fan said, to which another fan replied: “He has a pretty good arm.”
Jacobson sliced and diced the Panther defense with precise passing to lead the Jaguars to a 34-7 non-conference road win Friday. A week after suffering a knee injury against Raytown South that limited him to less than a quarter of action, Jacobson finished the night against Park Hill South by completing 16 of 19 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns.
“I felt awesome,” Jacobson said. “I really didn’t think about the knee – I didn’t have to – my line was awesome. I didn’t even really feel the pressure. They protected me really well, they keep their assignments – they looked awesome.”
Jacobson tossed first-quarter touchdown passes of 45 and 16 yards to senior running back Chris Gilyard and senior wide receiver Christian Roustic, respectively, as the Jaguars led 14-0 after the opening period.
Jacobson later added a 6-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Blake Horne in the third quarter as the Jaguars improved to 2-0 on the season.
“I’ve got to say, I wouldn’t be out there if there wasn’t a God,” Jacobson said. “I’ve got to give all the glory to Him because I don’t even know how I’m playing. Give all the glory to God.”
A swarming defense led by senior defensive end Logan Adkison and junior free safety Connor Harris stymied Park Hill South, holding the Panthers to 145 yards of total offense. Adkison was credited with two sacks on the night, and Harris came up big with two timely interceptions to thwart possible scoring drives by Park Hill South.
“He had two (interceptions) today,” Blue Springs South head coach Greg Oder said. “They were huge picks, too. He’s a hard-nose kid and he does a good job.”
Special teams were also a bright spot for the Jaguars. Junior running back Steven Sullivan returned a punt 46 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter and Harris booted field goals of 35 and 38 yards while converting all four of the Jaguars’ extra-point kicks.
