  • This year’s Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Challenge will be packed with Eastern Jackson County standouts.
Four local players suit up for the Missouri side next Friday at Shawnee Mission South High School. Seniors and first-team all-staters Justin Pitts (Blue Springs South), D’Vante Mosby (Fort Osage) will help lead the squad against the Kansas all-stars, along with Truman’s Lane Titus and Lee’s Summit North’s Tyler Anderson.
After leading the Blue Springs girls to the program’s fifth consecutive final four, Karyla Middlebrook and Lizzy Wendell – who were both named to the all-state first team – garnered selections to the contest, as did William Chrisman’s Nieka Wheeler and Truman’s Ashley Guenther.
Pitts, Wendell and Middlebrook are also all finalists for the 59th annual DiRenna Award, given to the best boys and girls high school basketball players in the Kansas City metro. Other finalists for the boys are Ottawa senior Semi Ojeleye, who has orally committed to Duke, Rockhurst senior Kyle Wolf, Blue Valley Northwest junior Clayton Custer and Shawnee Mission East senior Zach Schneider.
Joining Wendell and Middlebrook as girls finalists are St. Thomas Aquinas junior Tia Weledji, Smithville senior Maddie Nelson and Olathe Northwest senior Kelsey Brooks.
The winner will be announced at the All-Star Challenge awards show on Thursday.
The girls all-star game will tip at 6 p.m. Friday with the boys contest to follow. There will also be a dunk contest at halftime of the boys game.
Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults and only sold at the door the day of the event.
