  • Leslie Cole, an eighth grade English teacher at Raytown Middle School, has been chosen as the 2013-14 Raytown School District Teacher of the Year. Her daughter Asia attends Fort Osage High School.
Cole has taught for 10 years, six of which have been in Raytown. As Teacher of the Year, she will be eligible to compete in the Missouri State Teacher of the Year program. After completing an application and interview, the finalists are named this summer. The winner is announced in the fall.
“I was inspired to teach by my grandmother, Essie Mae Henderson, who taught school in Florida in a little old school house,” Cole said of what has inspired her.
What impressed the judges about Cole was her belief that education goes beyond the textbook and that it is her constant endeavor to impress that belief system upon her students.
“Ms. Cole is a positive presence on the Raytown Middle School staff and is very involved in building committees, seeking always to improve the school,” said Georgetta May, principal of Raytown Middle School. ““Ms. Cole’s lessons model quality and rigor, aligned with the district vision and mission.”
Cole is the 25th recipient of the honor, which originated in 1989. At the breakfast announcing the selection, 12 former district Teacher of the Year recipients were recognized, along with the program’s original coordinator, Shirley Wurth.
Other nominees for the award were Melanie Accurso, Latrice Boykin, Christa Bray, ennifer Cummings, Kendra Drake, Katie McBurney, Kelly McCully, Kourtney, Michael, Jennifer Pearson, Kaysie Saddler, Brandon Schaedel, Lindsay Templeton, Bart Tittle, Andy Wendling, Chad Whisenhunt and Lena Willey.
