  • The Blue Springs South girls soccer team was able to convert only two of 26 shots on goal in its season opener Friday night.
Fortunately for the host Jaguars, their defense was even stronger in a 2-0 shutout of the Raytown Blue Jays at Larry Stewart Memorial Stadium.
“It’s always positive to get a win in your first game,” South coach Todd Findley said.
The Jaguars made two first-half goals stand up for the win.
Brooke Howell scored off an assist from Abbey Widick in the 19th minute. Nearly 10 minutes later, Sarah Freiermuth scored off a Sarah Smedley assist.
“We were happy with how we dominated possession, and that set up a lot of scoring opportunities,” Findley said. “We were only able to finish two off, but that’s something we can work on.”
Findley said two freshmen, Mollie Maupin and Perry Rainey, made strong debuts to lead the defense, which held the Blue Jays to just one shot. Goalkeeper Kylie Young earned the shutout.
The Jaguars return to action next Friday when they play host to Notre Dame de Sion.
