  • Jerry Plantz: Politicians' cowardice on full display

  •  I’m sorry Newtown, Conn., for your loss of 20 children and six teachers in last December’s mass school shooting, then wasting your precious time and money by coming to Washington and pleading, unsuccessfully, your case for sensible gun control laws that nearly 90 percent of America favors.

  •  I’m sorry Newtown, Conn., for your loss of 20 children and six teachers in last December’s mass school shooting, then wasting your precious time and money by coming to Washington and pleading, unsuccessfully, your case for sensible gun control laws that nearly 90 percent of America favors.
I’m sorry Kentucky Senator Rand Paul shamelessly called Newtown families political props for President Obama.
I’m sorry former Congresswomen Gabrielle Gifford took a bullet to the head in January 2011 that caused irreparable harm to her health and career and that eight of her Tucson, Ariz., constituents lost their lives at her political event.
I’m sorry that the hero of that Tucson shooting, Patricia Maisch, had be removed from the Senate gallery following her yelling out “shame on you” brought on by the shock of a thumbs-down Senate vote of 54 to 46 even though it was a majority vote.
I’m sorry we have a Senate that requires 60 votes to kill a filibuster.
I’m sorry that National Rifle Association leaders who disseminate untruths such as, “The government wants to take our guns away and they want to destroy the Second Amendment.”
I’m sorry that ultraconservative media, columnists, bloggers, political cartoonists, talk-show hosts and ideologues such as Fox News (the only cable news network that did not air the live TV feed of the president’s gun speech following the Senate vote) who defend those falsely shouting, “They want to take our guns away. They want to destroy the Second Amendment.”
I’m sorry for those who use the inane, weak excuse that stricter gun control will not prevent future gun tragedies.
I am sorry for the 12 victims shot to death in Aurora, Colo., or the 13 at Columbina High School in Littleton, Colo., the six shot and killed five years ago at a City Council meeting in Kirkwood, Mo., and the 3,700 killed by gunfire since Newtown.
I am sorry for the 32 Americans who are shot dead daily even though “guns don’t kill people, people do.”
I’m sorry we have such a divided nation and politicians fear the wrath of the NRA.
I’m sorry but I would never join the NRA even though I am an army veteran who owns handguns and disagrees with the N RA’s interpretation of the Second Amendment
I’m sorry, but the Second Amendment needs amending,
If you don’t agree with sensible gun control, then I feel sorry for you as well.
I give you President John Adams’ toast: Independence forever.
