There will be a new Jackson County legislative chairman next year.

Jackson County First District Legislator Scott Burnett will be the chairman in 2009, said Rebecca Regan, his legislative aide.

The announcement of Burnett as new chairman will probably be given at the first legislative meeting on Jan. 5 at the Kansas City Courthouse.

Burnett didn’t have any comment about the announcement, Regan said.

He takes over for Legislator Dennis Waits, who served as chairman in 2008.

The chairman presides over each legislative meeting.

Burnett, a Democrat, was first elected to the legislature in 1998, re-elected in 2002 and 2006.

He served in the congressional offices of Reps. Bill Roy and Martha Keys in the mid 1970s and as field coordinator in the 1976 Carter/Mondale presidential campaign. In the Carter administration, Burnett was a special assistant by working in the areas of scheduling and advance preparations for the president. Then he served as Missouri coordinator for the Carter/Mondale re-election campaign in 1980.

For 12 years, Burnett worked for PPM, Inc., an environmental clean-up company as the marketing director, then vice president of operations. He is a partner in SGB Communications Inc, a public relations and lobbying firm in Kansas City.
