Authorities are looking for five teenagers who escaped from a juvenile detention center in Kansas City on Friday.

The 16th Judicial District Court of Jackson County announced Monday afternoon that warrants have been issued for the teens, according to court spokeswoman Mary Jacobi. Kansas City Police’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit and other law enforcement agencies are working on locating the teens.

At 8 p.m. Friday, officials at the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center searched several children so they could be returned to their rooms. A disturbance broke out that involved multiple youths, according to the court spokeswoman.

As workers tried to control the situation, residents released other children from their classrooms. The disturbance caused a diversion that allowed the juveniles to gain access to an exit route they forced open before staff could stop them, according to officials.

Police arrived to help in the situation.

The juveniles who escaped were a 17-year-old who was committed to state custody on Friday and awaited transport, a 16-year-old held on tampering and resisting arrest, a 16-year-old charged with robbery, a 14-year-old charged with statutory sodomy and a 15-year-old on probation for carrying a concealed weapon along with older offenses of burglary and stealing.

The incident happened by a combination of human error and facility shortcomings, according to officials, citing a preliminary investigation into the escape.

An internal assessment and investigation has started.
At the time of the incident, the facility was staffed by a higher number of workers than required by the Missouri Supreme Court.

Immediate steps were taken to prevent any further security breach. Also, some modifications to the facility are underway.

The last escape from the facility happened in October 2005 when a juvenile escaped.
