  • Nine students from across the Kansas City metro area have won awards for designing a book cover. Each year, Price Chopper conducts its “Bag Your Favorite Book” contest. This year Price Chopper received more than 8,000 entries. Three winning students attend school in the Independence/Blue Springs area.
The contest began in September when students in elementary, middle school and junior high entered the contest by designing an original cover for a book. Teachers determined if their students could pick a favorite book or an assigned book. Nine area students (one per grade between kindergarten and eighth grade) received a classroom party and a $500 donation for their school library.
    The area winners are -
    • Alejandro Martinez, kindergarten winner from Little Blue Elementary. His book cover was for “Listen to My Trumpet!” by Mo Willems.
    • Jaylen Ivey, the seventh grade winner from Brittany Hill Middle School in Blue Springs. Her book cover was for “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee.
    • Lauren Kelley, the eighth grade winner from Brittany Hill. Her book cover was for “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” by J.K. Rowling.
“Bag Your Favorite Book” is one of two programs under Price Chopper’s “Feeding the Reading Appetite” literacy initiative. Price Chopper launched “Feeding the Reading Appetite” in 2007 to provide teachers a new way to entice their students to read more.
