  • The Kansas City Royals claimed infielder Pedro Ciriaco off waivers from the San Diego Padres Tuesday.
    Ciriaco, 27, who has played all four infield positions this season, is batting .228 with eight stolen bases, three doubles, two triples and two homers in 51 games this season with San Diego and Boston.
    He was traded from Boston to San Diego on June 10 for a player to be named later, but was given his outright release by San Diego.
    He is in his fourth season in the major leagues and has a career .279 batting average. Ciriaco hit .293 with the Red Sox last season, setting career highs in nearly every offensive statistical category, including 15 doubles, 19 RBIs and 33 runs scored in 76 games.
