Frog Gigging Clinic: 8 to 10:30 p.m., James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area, 12405 S.E. Ranson Road, Lee’s Summit, 816-249- 3194. This is a free program presented by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Evening will begin with an amphibian program to help participants understand the difference between the frogs they are likely to encounter. Then there will be tips on how to harvest frogs from local experts. At about sunset, the class will go out to area lakes to try their luck. After frogs have been caught, the participants will learn to clean the frogs. Pre-registration is required and can be completed by visiting mdc.mo.gov/events and looking for this program. By the way, you will need a flashlight or headlight, clothes that can get muddy, and some bug spray. Fishing permits are not required for this program. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. SATURDAY Blue Springs Farmers Market: 7 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, 11th and Main Streets, Blue Springs. This market provides fruits, vegetables, meats and flowers. Drumm Farm Market: 8 a.m. to 12 noon, 3210 S. Lee’s Summit Road, Independence, 816- 373-3434. The children at Drumm Farm care for small livestock and harvest a four-acre garden. Come and see the products the children have made and grown. Independence Uptown Market: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturdays and Wednesdays during the summer months, 211 W. Truman Road. All the crafts and foods were grown or created within a 100 mile radius. You can purchase plants, honey, jams, eggs, soaps, birdhouses and other handcrafted items. Re-Creation of 1908 Grand Army of the Republic Encampment: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Lone Jack Battlefield Museum, cemetery and park. This re-creation will be a formal memorial ceremony as the Union soldiers dedicate a monument to the memory of their fallen comrades. The encampment will begin with the raising of the colors by Boy Scout Troop No. 33. The Greater Kansas City American Legion Brass Ensemble will perform Independence Day music and vocalist, Sara Hedges, will sing from the Grand Army of the Republic songbook. She will also lead a sing-along of patriotic songs. Living historians will lead a battlefield tour for your family. You can also test your skills and strength in old-fashioned games of horseshoe toss, foot races, sack races and tug of war. Admission is $5 for 8 years and older; 7 years and younger are free. Admission to the museum and Cave Hotel are included. Frontier Fourth at Fort Osage: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Fort Osage National Historic Landmark, 105 Osage St., Sibley. There will be cannon and musket firing, military drills, and stirring patriotic speeches. Summer Birding for Kids: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center, 4750 Troost Ave., Kansas City, 816-759- 7300. This program is designed for children ages 5-12. Learn how to use binoculars and the basics of bird identification. Learn which birds are at home at the discovery center and the best places to watch for birds this summer. We’ll provide binoculars, or you can bring your own.
