in Obituaries

Barbara (known as ‘Nonni’) Ann Jones was born on August 16, 1943, to Kenneth and Dorothy Matherly in Albuquerque, N.M. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, July 18, 2022.

The Matherly family moved to Independence, Mo. in the late 1940’s, but Barbara was an adventurous, hardworking, and independent soul. She moved to Reno, Nev. to work at a casino during the early 1960’s, then on to St. Louis, Mo. in the mid 1960’s, where she worked in the infamous Gaslight Square district before becoming a partner in a bar in St. Charles, Mo. In 1970, Barbara moved back to Independence to be near family. During the 1970’s and 1980’s, Barbara owned two bars in Independence, Pretzel’s Place and The Longbranch. She and her husband, Dennis, owned a small resort and restaurant (Clearwater) in Gravois Mills, Mo. during the mid-1980’s, before moving back to Independence in 1988. Barbara rounded out her career working at Cascone’s Italian restaurant. Barbara loved her family, loved to play bingo, and loved to travel to play bingo. She enjoyed watching trivia game shows and was an avid fan of Royals baseball and Chiefs football.

Barbara had two daughters, Angela (Campbell) Byer (h. Eric) and Melissa (Jones) Wulf (wh. Jesse), and two grandchildren, Nick Jones (w. Madeline) and Marie Patterson (p. Keith).

Barbara will be united in God’s grace with her parents and grandparents, her husband, Dennis, and her daughter, Melissa.

An open-house style Celebration of Life will be held at Cascone’s Italian Restaurant in the banquet room on Saturday, August 13 from noon to 3 p.m. Cascone’s is located at 3737 North Oak Trafficway, Kansas City, MO, 64116.

Arrangements: Royer Funeral Home, Independence.
