Amid trouble and worry, step up and do your part

While the stock and bond markets likely await their next downward legs and we are beset by political ads, I would like to talk about the state of citizenship in these United States. As a student of history, I remind myself regularly that our nation has suffered through presidents even worse than Trump or Biden. Members of Congress have sometimes resorted to one duel leading to death, canings and stabbings of each other. I recall the country’s mood in the dark days of assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy, the riots in Kansas City and other cities, student protests and riots, sometimes quite violent, over the Vietnam War.

Safety tips for summer activities

DEAR MAYO CLINIC: I love to be outdoors. I enjoy running, hiking and swimming. Often in the summer, I take my family camping, and we go kayaking, canoeing and do other activities. With the temperatures anticipated to be above average this summer, what advice do you have for making sure we avoid issues while being active outside?

Twin sister decides she rules the roost

DEAR ABBY: When my husband died two months ago, my identical twin helped me move in with her. She never married. I do all the chores -- clean six litter boxes, load and unload the dishwasher, etc. I don’t know how to operate her washer/dryer, as she has shown me only once. She doesn’t like the way I use my phone, set up files, nothing. She also drinks a lot, uses marijuana and is on a starvation diet. If I eat any carbohydrates at dinner, she accuses me of being a “glutton.”
