Blueberry season is upon us, which means berry-studded muffins, pancakes, salads and smoothies. The plump and juicy berry — thought to have one of the highest antioxidant levels of all everyday fruits — also makes a great base for a summer pie that’s both sweet and jammy, with just a touch of tang for balance.

It is time to get back to the basics

Either it’s a cycle we have to endure to get right side up or, maybe, we’ve gotten too big for our britches. I’ll admit there are plenty of things I do and purchase that aren’t necessary, practical or needed, and while doing some quality-time mowing, I think I’ve come up with an answer, for me anyway.

Court affirms prayer but not state-sanctioned prayer

I have two Norman Rockwell prints hanging on the wall in my office. I occasionally look at them as they both speak volumes about my core beliefs. One is entitled “Freedom of Speech” and shows a man standing up in a town hall meeting expressing his opinions while others look intently at him. Obviously, freedom of speech is a core principle of the First Amendment and has withstood the test of time for well over 230 years.

Dalai Lama marks 87th birthday

DHARMSALA, India (AP) — Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama marked his 87th birthday on Wednesday by inaugurating a library and museum in his hillside Indian headquarters. He was cheered by a large number of followers, including American actor Richard Gere, a longtime disciple.

Progress recalled and progress ahead

From The Examiner during the week of July 3-8, 1972: “TRUMAN ‘AHEAD OF TIME,’ LIBRARY SPEAKER RECALLS” – “In these feverish days of Women’s Lib, I am thrilled to recall the day in 1949 when I was summoned to the White House.” This was one of the comments by Mrs. Georgia Ness Gray, first woman treasurer of the United States, as she spoke at Fourth of July ceremonies at the Truman Library.
