PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Heat wave duration records could be broken in the Pacific Northwest this week, and authorities are expanding capacity at some cooling centers as temperatures near triple digits are forecast to extend into the weekend.
The Community Services League is preparing for its annual Back to School & Tennies for Kids events. These events will provide approximately 2,500 local children with backpacks full of school supplies, a pair of tennis shoes, and, as long as supplies last, a pair of socks.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer told fellow Senate Democrats on Thursday they now have an opportunity to achieve two “hugely important” priorities on health care and climate change, if they stick together and approve a deal he brokered with hold-out Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin.
Lunches provided by area community centers during the week of Aug. 1.

Next Tuesday’s elections for the Jackson County Legislature include several contest primary races. The Examiner posed a short series of questions to candidates in those contested races whose districts are in Eastern Jackson County.
Given the chance Wednesday to meet with the three finalists for the Independence police chief position, some citizens say they want a “new start” and the ability to maintain and build community connections from whomever gets selected.
Landon Hudson has a larger-than-life personality that helped cement his legacy in the Blue Springs High School theater and forensics departments. “Landon is a giant ball of energy and one of the kindest, and most giving students I’ve ever been associated with,” said Blue Springs first-year forensics coach Lisa Lowman, who worked with Hudson the past three years as the school’s theater director.
