Examiner staff The Mid-Continent Public Library is offering its Food for Fines program Sept. 12 to 18. Library patrons can donate non-perishable foods instead of paying money for overdue fines and replacement card charges. Those who don’t own fines or fees are encouraged to give as well. The food gathered at branches in Independence, Blue Springs, Grain Valley, Buckner and Oak Grove goes to the Community Services League. Each food item counts as $1 toward fines and fees, with a maximum of $10. The library suggests donations of boxed meals, canned food, peanut butter, cereal and pasta. Nonnutritious donations are not accepted, and donations must not be expired, damaged or opened. No glass, plastic or cardboard drink containers.
