The Kansas City Current is bringing back its captain for the 2023 National Women’s Soccer League season.
Veteran midfielder Desiree Scott agreed to a free agent contract with the Current for the upcoming season, the team announced Tuesday morning.
It will be the third season with the Current and the seventh overall in the NWSL for Scott, a Canadian national team star.
“I am extremely excited to be back in Kansas City and for another opportunity to bring a championship home,” Scott said in a statement. “We now have playoff and championship experience but even more importantly, the belief that we belong on those big stages! I know as a group we learned a lot last season and the motivation is definitely there to make this 2023 season another one to remember. Looking forward to an exciting year with this incredible group!”

She served as team captain last season, helping guide the Current to the NWSL championship game.
Scott has played 124 games in the NWSL and surpassed 10,000 minutes played last season.
“Desi is an extremely important part of this club, and we are so happy to have her return for the 2023 season,” Current general manager Camille Levin Ashton said. “Her leadership and infectious positivity lift up this team, both on the field and off.”
Scott has been a member of the Canadian national teams since she was 16, debuting with the senior team in 2010. She has made 186 international appearances, helping Canada to an Olympic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and bronze medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. She has also played in the 2011, 2015 and 2019 FIFA World Cup tournaments.
