Pharaoh Cinema theater manager Brian Wolfgang puts up the names of five Filipino members of Buffalo Bill's Wild West traveling show Thursday afternoon on the theater's marquee visible from Truman Road. The 'We Are Coming' display is part of an effort by University of Colorado professors Yumi Roth and Emannuel David to remember the eight Filipino 'rough riders' who were part of Buffalo Bill's show, which passed through Independence in 1900 on the way to and from performances. The names will remain on display through Sunday. The five individuals named on the marquee are Ysidoro Constantino, Gregorio Azarraga, Eustaquio Caliz, Filimon Ermoso and Lorenzo Eman. They joined the show in 1900, after three other Filipinos had joined the show a year earlier, according to Roth and David's research. Roth and David are of Filipino descent, and they have arranged for the names to be displayed on theaters in Boulder and Denver, Colorado; Dover-Foxcroft, Maine; and Los Angeles -- in the spirit of announcing an upcoming show.
