In Independence, crowds lined Truman Road at the Square in Independence, to participate in the "No Kings" protest Saturday, one of many across the state and the country. Jefferson Lujin, owner of the Scandinavia Place store on the Square, said he estimated that a couple hundred people gathered near Truman Road to protest the ways they believe the Trump administration is a threat to democracy at the federal and state level. Lujin had posted on social media that his gift shop would have refreshments available for protesters who attended the rally, though any negative response to that, including a message of I hope your building doesnt catch on fire, was limited to more social media chatter and not in person. Independence police said they had no calls stemming from that event. Photo Credit: Photo courtesy of Jefferson Lujin
