Lindal was born in Oklahoma to Jesse and Thelma (McSwain) Mark on June 15, 1927. Several years later his family moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where he and his two younger brothers grew up. His interest in math and science began early and education became a lifelong passion. He attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa for two years where he played football and ran track and then Columbia University in New York City where he earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Chemical Engineering. He married his college sweetheart from Graceland, Doris Harris in 1951. He was drafted into the U.S. Army upon the completion of his degree programs and served stateside. After serving in the Army, Lindal worked for Fluor Corporation in California close to his childhood home. In 1967, he took a new job with Jackson County as a project manager during the building of many capital improvements for the county, including Arrowhead Stadium for the Chiefs and Kaufman Stadium for the Royals along with the infrastructure for the stadiums. Since taking the job with Jackson County his family has remained in the Independence area. Later jobs included KCP&L and CF Nofsinger, the latter being a return to chemical engineering project management which he enjoyed.
Lindal was a lifelong member of the Community of Christ Church where he served as an elder and pastor of several congregations. His many interests included singing in the Messiah Choir for 20+ years, painting, golf, cooking, bicycling, playing tennis, snow skiing, fishing, playing the piano and guitar, reading, and technology. He enjoyed exercising to stay healthy and enjoyed competition, even if it was only with himself, trying to become the best he could be.
