The museum’s current special exhibit, “Rooted Among the Ashes,” is a photographic portrayal of survivor trees from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs. It is free with admission and runs through Oct. 1.

Harry S. Truman Home: 219 N. Delaware St., Independence. Open for tours Wednesday through Sunday. Tours are free but timed, and visitors must go to the visitor center at 223 N. Main St. to get tickets. The visitor center is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Tours begin at 9 a.m., and the last tour each day begins at 4:30 p.m.

Noland Home: Across the street from the Truman home is the Noland home, where President Truman’s aunt, uncle and cousins lived. It’s open to visitors on the same schedule as the Truman home. Call 816-254-9929.

National Frontier Trails Museum: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. 318 W. Pacific Ave, Independence, 816-325-7575. 1859 Jail: 217 N. Main St., Independence, 816-252-1892. Operated by the Jackson County Historical Society. 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday. $6 for adults, $5 for seniors 65 and older, $3 ages 6 to 16, free for ages 5 and under. Dillingham-Lewis House Museum: 101 S.W. 15th St., Blue Springs, 816-224-8979. This house, built in 1906, is the location of the Blue Springs Historical Society. The house is open Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

George Owens Nature Park: 1601 S. Speck Road, Independence, 816-325-7115. Eighty-six acres of forest, lakes, hiking trails and wildlife. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
