Descendants and family members from some of the families who lived in The Neck neighborhood in Independence pose for a picture Saturday morning behind the granite monuments in McCoy Park designed to remember the predominantly Black neighborhood. Families were displaced in the 1960s amid urban renewal, often causing great hardship, and the area was transformed into the current-day park. The city of Independence received a grant for the two monuments one which has a map of the former neighborhood and one which lists the names of families who lived there. Organizers also planted a tree in memory of Virginia Jacobs, a former Neck resident and advocate who led protests against displacement.
